Visit the illustrious Ancient City Wall in Xian

Xian – the capital of Shaanxi Province, located in the northwest of China, is the oldest city among “Four Great Ancient Capitals of China”. This ancient city used to the capital of many significant China’s dynasties such as Zhou, Qin, Han, Sui and Tang. That’s why it is related to Qin Shi Huang, Tang Ming Huang, Wu Zetian – some famous China’s emperors who have the most tremendous impacts on Chinese history. It’s also the starting location of the one and only Silk Road.

Xi’an is one of the destinations that attract largest numbers of visitors in China. According to the media and tourists, the reputation of Xi’an is comparable to Athens of Greek, Cairo of Egypt and Rome of Italy. Many residents usually say that “Every step you make, there is a historical artifacts under your foot”.
There’s an interesting fact is that on the 26th of October, the forefather of Facebook – Mark Zuckerberg visited Xian. He even posted on the Internet pictures of him jogging in the city, contemplating the Terracotta Army sculptures in the Mausoleum of the First Qin Shi Huang and praying at Big Wild Goose – a beautiful Pagoda which is extremely famous for its supernaturalness.
Ancient Xi’an City Wall was constructed on the first emperor of the Ming Dynasty – Zhu Yuanzhang’s order, up to now, it has gone through 600 years. This wall is 12 meters in height, located on a 12 to 14 – meter wide surface which is surrounded by a deep moat. One special thing of Xian Ancient Wall is that its thickness is 18 meters which is a larger number compared to the wall’s height. There are 98 observatories and every observatory is 120 meters far from each other.
Changle, Anding, Yongning and Anyuan are the four gates of Xian City Wall, located in four directions: East, West, South, North. Among those gates, Yongning is the most attractive to visitors thanks to its eye – catching decoration. There are three towers built at each gate; especially one is located outside, separately from the wall in order to lift and lower the suspension bridge across the moat. Moreover, between the gates there is a steep path leading to the top of the wall.
Outside of the city wall are 5948 loopholes used to observe soldiers shooting arrows. Meanwhile, the inside is equipped with banisters. Building materials of the wall are also very exceptional. Initially the walls were made from soil mixed with lime and sticky rice extract. But after that, the walls were entirely made of bricks.
Visitors can visit the wall through many different entrances. The North gate opens daily from 8 am to 10 pm. Hanguang gate opens from 8 am to 5:30 pm every day. About other gates, their opening time depends on each month. Specifically: November – April: 8 am – 6 pm
May – October: 8 am – 7 pm
November – the end of March: 8 am – 6 pm
First thing visitors should bear in mind is that nowadays, the wall is available to visitors who go sightseeing by walking or riding a bike. In Xian, bicycles can be a brilliant choice to contemplate the Ancient City Wall and Xian’s landscape.
