7 High Cholesterol Foods to Avoid

The American Heart Association, or AHA, asserts that food rich in saturated and trans fat can raise your cholesterol levels and potentially lead to heart problems. The following is a list of foods that contain high levels of fats, sodium, and cholesterol that should be avoided in our diets and substituted with healthier choices.

Egg Yolks

Egg yolks are known to have high levels of cholesterol. According to AHA, the maximum intake of cholesterol recommended in a day is 300 mg. For people who have been diagnosed with high cholesterol, they need to have a maximum of 200 mg cholesterol daily. Egg yolks usually contain around 213 mg cholesterol. Egg whites are the best choice when consuming eggs because they are high in protein and low in fat, cholesterol and sodium.

Macaroni and Cheese

Macaroni and cheese has high amounts of cholesterol and saturated fats due to the dairy and processed cheese among other ingredients. Additionally, there’s an excessive amount of calories that is not good for those who are trying to maintain a healthy diet. Low fat cheese and skim milk are two alternatives for lowering the levels of unhealthy ingredients in this food.

Ice Cream

Ice cream is a favorite for both kids and adults.  However, this sweet tasting dessert contains more fat and cholesterol than burgers and glazed doughnuts. You should only eat ice cream in small portions. Additionally, ice cream has a great deal of empty calories that provide no real nutrients for the body.

Steak

Steaks, especially rib-eye steaks, are rich in saturated fats and cholesterol expecially if you do not trim off the fat. They take up at least 20% of the recommended daily fat intake and 22% of the allowable cholesterol intake.. Having leaner cuts such as flank, tenderloin, tip or round steak is a good substitute for rib-eye steaks. These cuts are said to be lower in cholesterol and fat.

Seafood

Most seafood can be good for the health. But, there are some that are not. One of these is lobsters. Just 3 ounces of this already contains 61 mg cholesterol, and this is not even dipped in butter. A serving of lobster is not good for people with high cholesterol or heart problems. Seafood lovers can have it broiled and not fried. Avoid dipping or cooking seafood in butter. To lower cholesterol levels, eating this in moderation is recommended.

Fried Chicken

Chicken is actually said to contain low fat and a better alternative to meat. However, restaurants and fast food chain usually serve fried chicken, which actually raises the level of cholesterol. The skin of the chicken when fried contains more cholesterol and fat compared to a whole burger or a scoop of ice cream. It is advised to remove the skin when eating fried chicken.

Liver

Liver contains high amount of iron, which is basically good for your health. However, it is also considered as one of the foods that has high cholesterol levels. Animal organs tend to be high in cholesterol because this is where the animals produced and stored a lot of the cholesterol. A beef liver contains 331 mg cholesterol, which is actually more than the recommended daily cholesterol intake. Therefore, it is best to choose healthier lean meats than eating animal organs.
