Exercises for the Brain

Often in our lives, we get inspired by any actor or a model’s appearance on TV. We take it very seriously and starting cutting down what we eat or exercise physically to maintain an apt body shape to face the world with loads of positive attitude, but how often do we forget to train the brain internally to carry out commands at our own will rather than it giving you commands most of the time? Well, not much, we don’t do much in the way to train our brain to do some tasks no matter how physically or healthy we are.

Cognitive tasks carried out by the mind are attentiveness/concentration, recollection, verbal communication and decision making tasks.

These tasks must be triggered on a routine basis for effective results, and the benefits of these in turn translate to your happiness when you find yourself sharp and attentive even as you age.

Down listed are some essential activities you could work on for more effective functionality of the brain.

  • Concentration – What’s the purpose of life if you don’t concentrate on what you do even on small, easy tasks? It’s important to concentrate and be attentive in all the chores at home or at work. We all have some concentration for known tasks or tasks done subconsciously on a routine basis, but how long does it last and how effective is it when you undertake newer tasks and are distracted by sounds or other activities? It’s important to train the mind to do different things all the times as it unlocks the blocks created and finds new ways to solve solutions. For example, you could start by changing the route taken to workplace that triggers a new belief inside that there’re other ways to reach the office. You could also try your hand at reorganizing the bureau. By doing so, if at any point your brain is rusted by the same old routine activities, it gets a new life by waking up to do newer tasks. Aging is another problem we face where concentration levels dip obstructing our multitasking capacities through unavoidable distractions. You could also try solving math solutions while listening to music and not getting distracted or studying at a crowded place, which over a period of time, is beneficial in getting proper hold of the mind and improves attentiveness and concentration levels.
  • Recollection – As we know, concentration is very essential in our lives and is beneficial in keeping our minds safe as we age, but what if don’t recollect the procedures needed to train our brains? So, memory also plays an important role while you’re reading, reasoning and computing mentally. Declination in memory could easily be noticed as we age if we don’t train the memory building blocks. It’s no surprise when teachers ask us to memorize at school, which in a way is very effective when you reach teens, as the benefits are pretty evident at that time. Catching the tune of a song and singing it repeatedly or singing out lyrics of a song by heart also serves the purpose. All these help in upping acetylcholine levels in the brain that aid in improving, recollecting and effective brain building. If you’re right hand dominant, try using your left hand for activities, which also triggers the brain to do a new activity.
  • Verbal communication – What if you have good concentration levels and memory, but can’t communicate verbally? Again, every exercise is interrelated and benefits are massive when the combination of these exercises is carried out to perfection. Again, perfection is unattainable, yet trying to be perfect does serve the purpose here. Communicating verbally improves our capacity to recognize, remember and understand words. They also assist in language and grammar skills. It’s good if you develop the habit to speak at least 2 languages, the effects of which are beneficial as we age. Reading novels also improves one’s vocabulary and get to know newer words for conversing with a friend or colleague. Going through newspapers on a daily basis on subjects that interests you would also be good.
  • Decision-making – Well, now you have concentration, good memory and excellent verbal skills, but what about decision making? Is it poor? Yes, it is for most part if not worked properly. Our judgment is based on what’s good or bad for us which for the most part works, but making a decision that fits a current scenario is a task. Normally, people look into decision making as something that fits them rather than thinking about its effects on others. Well, everything works in this material world, but perfect decision making comes through experience and building up the process of achieving it at a later age when pursuing a career is very essential. There shouldn’t be a moment of getting stuck in taking a decision or taking a long time to make a decision finally. Activities like socializing is a very good option as we see people of different cultures and traditions that lets us know what they’re thinking about, and perhaps we could arrive at a certain solution regarding our own lives.

Lastly, these exercises would prove beneficial as time goes by, and we could certainly relax thinking we did exercise the brain to the success achieved. Keep working on it, nothing happens in a day except a hearty meal or proper sleep. In the meantime, be aware of what you eat and how much you sleep, perhaps that’s the start to a long journey of effectively training the mind on the dos and don’ts the brain needs to be taught.
