Inevitable (For some of us)
Weight gain, especially stomach fat, can creep up fast and before you know it, those few extra pounds have turned into a pudgy little roll along your midsection (Yuck). Obviously, weight gain happens for many reasons. Some women may find that having children may have led to them losing their “girlish figures” or that new office job you took 6 months ago is now starting to show along your waistline. Both men and women alike though seem to have a harder time controlling their weight as soon as they hit middle age and a lot of the time the problem is as simple as consuming more calories than you are burning. Whatever the reason, if you are overweight, you need to lose those extra pounds.
The Facts Don’t Lie (In This Case)
I know you have heard it all before that being overweight is unhealthy, puts more strain on your heart and increases your chance for diabetes. Well unfortunately the facts in this case don’t lie. You would be healthier, feel better and could enjoy more activities if you weren’t carrying around those extra pounds you just don’t need.
The problem is that all too often people start diets and exercise programs, but then struggle to keep at them. This can get very frustrating and lead to feelings of failure. One of the secrets to permanent weight loss is starting a cardio regimen that is maintainable for your lifestyle so that you incorporate it into your daily life. It just becomes something that you do for no other reason than the sheer fact that is now a part of your life (right alongside eating and sleeping). Your new fitness program will be used to burn off more calories than you take in by eating less and exercising to lose weight.
Fingers in Your Ears (I’m going to Say a Dirty Word)
I know, exercise is a dirty word, but there is a trick to it. Don’t treat it as ‘Exercise” but rather as an activity. Find an activity that you like to do and it won’t seem like such a burden. If you enjoy dancing, cut the rug. Maybe you like to swim or even play golf, both of which will burn up calories. Any type of physical activity will work, just as long as you stick to it while watching your calorie intake.
Easy Does It!
For the beginner, you do not want to overdo it and end up with an injury. Start at a slow pace and eventually work your way up to longer periods of exercise or a more intense workout. Walking is a great place to start and once you’ve established your routine, then you can work your way up to jogging. If you feel tired or winded during your workout, stop and rest. Do not push yourself to the point of exhaustion and always remember that you do not have to do it all at once either. It is actually better for you to do your workout in spurts of 5 to 10 minutes at a time, several times throughout the day.
You’ve Got the Stomach Blues
When weight gain begins, one of the first places for most people that gladly receive those extra pounds is typically the stomach area. Don’t fret because there are certain exercises that can specifically target your stomach area in particular your abs. If you are looking to lose stomach fat fast then you are going to want to become familiar with these ones. One of the best abs exercises you can do is the called the “bicycle”. Here’s how you do it.
Lie on your back on a mat with your hands behind your head. Lift your knees up to your chest while lifting your shoulder blades up from the floor. Pivot to the left while moving your right elbow to your left kneecap and straighten out your right leg. Repeat using the opposite knee and elbow. A plan on completing 2 sets of 15 reps gets the maximum benefits. A big bonus is that this is a fairly easy exercise that can be done practically anywhere, even while you are watching TV.
To put this all into perspective, to lose one pound in seven days, you have to exercise enough to burn 3,500 calories more than you have eaten. So the fewer calories you consume, the less exercise you will have to do. Whether you are looking to lose stomach fat fast or just need to lose the pounds all over, the way to stay motivated is to make your exercising activities fun and enjoyable. If you’re not enjoying what you are doing then you are not going to stick with it. By enjoying an activity you will do it more and you will lose the weight. Get started now, don’t wait. Start easy and just enjoy the ride. You and your body will be very thankful in the end. HAVE FUN!
